M:Hello!Could you please introduce yourself?

Francisca:My name is Francisca Rebolledo, and I am a Chilean lawyer. I work remotely for a startup and study for the England & Wales Bar exam to become a dual-qualified lawyer. I arrived in China one year ago, and I have been taking Mandarin classes at the Mandarin Inn ever since. I first started level 1, which I finished successfully in June 2024, obtaining the full score on the HSK1 exam. Now, I am finishing the level 2 course and planning to take the HSK2 after the Chinese New Year. My goal is to accomplish level 3 next.

M:Why did you come to China?

Francisca:I came to China for a family project with my husband. We have been living abroad since 2019, which has been an invaluable opportunity for us, both professionally and personally.

M: Do you think it is useful for foreigners to learn Mandarin? Why? And why you’d like to learn Mandarin?

Francisca:I believe that learning Mandarin is part of the fully immersive experience of living in Shanghai. It presents itself as the perfect moment and setting to learn the language. Learning a new language challenges your skills, and I consider it a privilege to have the time availability and a fresh mind to do so. Mandarin may be a challenging language to learn at times for foreigners, but a huge milestone in one’s personal and professional career.

I decided to learn Mandarin since I knew we were relocating to China, both as a personal goal and as I understood that it would be an asset that would complement my professional background when I came back to Chile.

M:As a good student, how do you learn Mandarin?could you give an example?Would you like to share your tips?(like How you encourage yourself when you learn Chinese? How do you keep interest to learn Chinese?)

Francisca:I am conscious that learning Mandarin is challenging at times. Patience is key to keeping up with the motivation. What I have found very useful is to book some review classes at the end of each level, where I can refresh what I have learned and round up the most important words and concepts. Also, I have pushed myself to practice my Mandarin in common life situations, like when I order my coffee at manner. It feels awkward and embarrassing sometimes, but when you get the other person to understand you, it makes your day!

M:Would you like to talk something about your teacher, do you like him/her? And What kinds of teacher’s behavior will encourage you to learn Mandarin?

Francisca:My teacher is Kathy, and she is amazing. What I most like about her is that she contextualizes the words I learn in each class into daily situations and contexts. That way, it is easy for me to memorize them and apply them outside the classroom. Also, she is very patient when having to repeat the meaning of some words several times, specially on those days when I am tired after early work meetings.

M:You seldom ask for leave, what encourage you are keeping doing classes ? and we have many online resources, have you used it, and how do you feel about it?

Francisca:I try to keep myself motivated as I dimension that the opportunity to be based in Shanghai and learn a new language is unique and will not repeat itself. Also, as I work remotely, going to in-person classes at Mandarin Inn twice a week builds up my schedule. My 15-minute walk through the French concession from my home to class is something I look up to every week!

M:We are doing workshop normally once a month, how do you feel about it, and do you have any suggestion, or do you have any subject you are interested?

Francisca:I have attended some of the workshops, which has been amazing to meet other students from the institute while learning about a new topic. I would like to learn more about Chinese food, maybe through a cooking workshop for students.

M:Do you have any interesting thing during your Mandarin study or the problems (details should be good)you meet in your daily life as the language to share to us.

Francisca:My favourite coffee is the flat white, which in Chinese is ao bai (Australian white), which at first didn’t make much sense to me. I was amazed to know that the flat white was actually created at a brunch place in Sidney, and since then I never forgot how to order my ao bai in mandarin.
