Event Recap | Spring Wellness And Seasonal Transition

On Thursday afternoon, we held a special and engaging event at Mandarin Inn, focusing on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and spring health preservation. We invited Dr. Kayee Chong from Body & Soul to introduce our international friends to ways of maintaining good health during this unique season. From liver care and dietary adjustments to specific acupressure techniques, the session aimed to help participants achieve balance in their bodies—what the Chinese often refer to as “Yin-Yang balance.”

Highlights from the TCM Workshop

Dr. Kayee Chong explained five different flavors from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), corresponding to the five elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Each of these flavors is associated with specific foods that help address certain bodily symptoms. For example, in the Five Elements theory, “Wood” corresponds to the sour taste, which has an astringent and stabilizing effect, helping to control excessive excretion or secretion. It is used to treat conditions such as frequent urination, heavy menstruation, chronic cough, or diarrhea.

Dr.Kayee Chong

Dr. Kayee Chong introduced the concept of food choices for different body constitutions from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). For example, if you often feel depressed, tense, bloated, or frequently sigh, you can choose to eat fruits such as oranges, pomelos, mandarins, and hawthorns, as well as ingredients like cilantro and radish. These foods can help alleviate some common health issues that arise during the spring season. Moreover, all the recommended foods are easy to find and very convenient to purchase. For expatriates living in Shanghai, these items are readily available in local markets.

Dr.Kayee Chong
