Q: Please tell us how long you have stayed in China, how long you have studied at Mandarin Inn, what kind of course you are learning, and which level you are.

A: I am Wesley. I have lived in China for almost 3 years, and studied Chinese for over 2years. Now i am HSK3 level. I work for a high-speed railway company.

Q: Why did you come to China?What’s your impression on China or one specific city of China?
你为什么来中国? 你对中国的印象怎么样？
A: I came to China in 2018. My first visit to China was in 2014. China is a huge country, a great diversity of landscape people and present cuisine. After being able to travel around China and experience quite a bit on the very southernmost the most northern places and from the east to the far west, all is very different, I can see a great connection between the very eastern part of Europe and the western part of China so this is the Silkroad on China historically.

Q: Do you think it is useful for foreigners to learn Mandarin? Why? And why you’d like to learn Mandarin?

A: I set out to learn Mandarin in China as I am immersed in the language. I can use the language for simple day to day activities, thus I can naturally study and practice. It is a wonderful way to learn more about China and understand how the language impacts thinking and culture.

Q: As a good student, how do you learn Mandarin? Would you like to share your tips?

A: Make sure you go to class regularly, and try to avoid long gaps between class. I also use some apps to test my word recognition and help me write the character strokes correctly. One method is to look at a tree of words, having a central word and all the derivatives of the word use and how the word can be used with other characters to form different words. When I do my small tests, I aim to improve my average score. When I continually make no mistakes, I feel confident and happy with the achievement.

Q: Would you like to talk something about your teacher, do you like him/her? And What kinds of teacher’s behavior will encourage you to learn Mandarin?

A: All my teachers share their unique experience in teaching Chinese to Non-Chinese speakers. They have delightful stories about past teachings and how students are overcome challenges.

Q: Does mandarin inn meet your requirement of Chinese course? Atmosphere and environment are important for learning language, what do you think about these two factors in Mandarin inn?

A: Mandarin Inn teachers are of a very high standard. They are able to adapt their teaching style to what works be for you. The add extra value by creating conversation challenges in group classes, and make up flash cards to help you learn the words. They also show you small tricks and historical stories to help you remember the words. The school has a lovely relaxed setting where you can concentrate to perform at your best.

Q: Mandarin Inn hold cultural workshops every month, did you participate? And what kind of cultural activity do you expect in the future?

A: I have been unlucky and not able to attend the workshops due to other commitments. I have spoken to other student who have thoroughly enjoyed the workshops. The workshops allow them to engage with other who are learning, practice their Mandarin and learn more about Chinese culture. All in a very relaxed environment.

Q: Mandarin Inn offers online course management system and some resources for learning Mandarin. How do you think about these online things? Does it works? Do you have some suggestions for that?

A: The online learning is very good.The zoom meetings work well with a group class and with individual class. The whiteboard and screen sharing allow for clear learning, additional notes and easy corrections. The video conferencing is clear and engaging as you can see the teacher and other students. The E-learning system for learning follows your HSK modules, and gives you flashcards, tests and sentences. You can use it on the metro for 5 minutes or for an hour at home. The class management is easy, you have a full schedule, can easily apply to change a class or not attend.

Q: We’d like to create a community for our students, we hope more and more students will be involved in our school’s running. Is there any advice for our principle?

A: Finding out what people want and value. How much time to people have and what is the best medium to have the interaction. Are some people willing to lead or contribute to a project in a role. Explain how their contribution can benefit them.
