In this interview, we are delighted to welcome Lisette from Chile, a Sales Analysis Manager at a lithium mining company, who shares her experiences living and learning in China. For Lisette, learning a new language is not only a tool for communication but also a key to understanding culture. Though her Mandarin journey has been challenging, her persistence has brought valuable rewards. Let’s listen to her story!
访谈内容：
M：你好！请先做一下自我介绍吧。
M：Hello!Could you please introduce yourself?
Lisette：我叫Lisette，来自智利（南美洲），在一家锂矿公司担任销售分析经理。我在上海已经生活了9个月，来到Mandarin Inn学习了大约7个月。刚来的时候我对中文一无所知，开始时我是零基础，哈哈……现在我正在学习基础课程，已经快完成HSK 1了。这段学习旅程非常美好，有时候也很艰难，因为中文与我的母语（西班牙语）差异很大。我希望能有更多的时间来学习，不过我觉得自己进步了很多，现在的交流能力比刚来时好得多，我感到很自豪。
Lisette：My name is Lisette, I’m from Chile (South America), I work in a Lithium Mining Company as a Sales Analytics Manager. I’ve been living in Shanghai for 9 months now and studying in Mandarin Inn for around 7 months. I knew absolutely nothing of Chinese when I got here, I started in Level 0 haha… I’m learning the basics now, already finishing HSK 1. It has been a really nice journey of learning, tough at times, since it’s super different from my mother tongue (Spanish), and I wish I could have more time to dedicate to study, however I think I have improved a lot and feel proud that now I can communicate much better than when I arrived.
M：你为什么来中国？
M：Why did you come to China?
Lisette：我来这里是为了工作，我们在这里有公司。
Lisette：I came for work, we have an office here.
M：你认为外国人学习普通话有用吗？为什么？你为什么想学习普通话？
M： Do you think it is useful for foreigners to learn Mandarin? Why? And why you’d like to learn Mandarin?
Lisette：我认为绝对有用，普通话是一个重要工具，不仅在这里生活时有用，甚至在简历上也是一个加分项。我想学习普通话，因为我觉得能与人交流是必要的，不仅仅依赖翻译，而是能和人实际对话，理解语言后，能更好地理解文化。我非常喜欢学习新语言，既然我住在这里，就不能错过学习普通话的机会。
Lisette：I think it’s absolutely useful and a great tool for life, not only for when you live here, but it’s actually a plus even in your resume. I wanted to learn Mandarin because I think it’s necessary to be able to communicate, not only using a translator, but actually talking to people, it’s different when you actually understand a language, you can understand the culture. I really like learning new languages, and since I’m living here, I cannot miss the opportunity to learn Mandarin.
M：作为一个好学生，你是怎么学习普通话的？能举个例子吗？你愿意分享一下你的学习技巧吗？（比如你如何在学习中文时鼓励自己？如何保持学习中文的兴趣？）
M：As a good student, how do you learn Mandarin?could you give an example？Would you like to share your tips?(like How you encourage yourself when you learn Chinese? How do you keep interest to learn Chinese?）
Lisette：我不确定自己算不算好学生，哈哈，我真的觉得自己应该花更多的时间学习，但由于工作原因没有足够的时间。“学习”的方法是思考（大声和自己说话，哈哈）我会想用中文怎么说，然后找我缺失的单词。有机会时我会用中文点餐，当我不理解某些内容时，我会把从翻译软件上听到的说出来，看看是否合理，然后通常会向老师请教。
Lisette：I’m not sure I’m a good student haha I really think I should study more, but I don’t have enough time because of work. The way “study” is thinking (talking to myself out loud haha) how I would say something in Chinese and then search the words that I’m missing. When I have the opportunity I order in Chinese, and when I don’t understand something, I speak what I heard in the translator, to see if it makes sense, and then usually I ask my teacher about it.
M：你想谈谈你的老师吗？你喜欢他/她吗？老师的哪些行为会激励你学习普通话？
M：Would you like to talk something about your teacher, do you like him/her? And What kinds of teacher’s behavior will encourage you to learn Mandarin?
Lisette：是的，我非常喜欢我的老师Julia，我觉得她教得很好。她让我感到放松，并且会回答我所有的问题。她还鼓励我提高发音。
Lisette：Yes, I really like my teacher Julia, I think she’s very good at teaching. She makes me feel comfortable and replies to all my questions. Also she encourages me to have a better pronunciation.
M：你很少请假，是什么让你坚持上课的？我们有很多在线资源，你用过吗？你觉得这些资源怎么样？
M：You seldom ask for leave, what encourage you are keeping doing classes ? and we have many online resources, have you used it, and how do you feel about it?
Lisette：我坚持上课的原因是我真的想学习普通话，正如我之前提到的，新语言是生活中的一项重要工具，我觉得这还能“开阔”思维，帮助我打破交流障碍，更好地理解人们及其文化，某种程度上也让我更了解这个世界。
Lisette：What encourages me to keep attending classes is that I really want to learn Mandarin, as I mentioned before, I think that learning a new language is always a great tool for life and also I feel like it “brightness” your mind, so you are able to drop the communication barriers and understand so many things about people and their culture, somehow understand a little bit more about the world.
M：我们每个月通常会举办一次工作坊，你觉得怎么样？你有什么建议吗？或者你对哪些主题感兴趣？
M：We are doing workshop normally once a month, how do you feel about it, and do you have any suggestion, or do you have any subject you are interested?
Lisette：不幸的是我对这些工作坊关注不够，所以不太知道该如何建议。
Lisette：Unfortunately, I have not paid enough attention to these workshops, so I’d not know what to suggest.
M：在你的普通话学习过程中，有没有有趣的事情或日常生活中遇到的语言问题（尽量详细）？
M：Do you have any interesting thing during your Mandarin study or the problems （details should be good）you meet in your daily life as the language to share to us.
Lisette：我觉得我有点害怕与人交谈，因为发音很困难，我担心自己会说错话，所以我有点害羞，哈哈，但现在我正在努力多说。
Lisette：I think I’m a little afraid to talk to people, because the pronunciation is so difficult that I think I will say something inappropriate, so I get shy haha but now I’m trying to speak more.
M：最后，请说一句你最喜欢的中文句子，为什么？
M：Finally, please say a your favourite Chinese sentence, and why.
Lisette：“今天太热了”。我喜欢中文里“r”的发音，因为它与西班牙语中的“r”非常不同，对我来说是个真正的挑战，哈哈。
Lisette：Jintian tai re le. I like the way the “r” sounds in Chinese, because it’s soooo different to our “r” in Spanish, it’s a real challenge for me to pronounce it haha.
