You&#8217;re afraid of making mistakes, of being laughed at, of being &#8220;wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside Mandarin Inn&#8217;s century-old heritage villa, one teacher often tells such students: &#8220;It&#8217;s okay &#8211; Chinese, a lot of the time, depends on the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She didn&#8217;t study Chinese literature, nor did she graduate from a teaching college. I graduated from Assumption University in Thailand. My degree was in Visual Communication Arts. After that, I worked in design and creative roles at 4A advertising agencies. In fact, I spent years working in both Thailand and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might sound far removed from Chinese teaching, but she doesn&#8217;t see it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Advertising and language teaching both require discovering your audience&#8217;s pain points and insights, and finding the right way to communicate with them.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the creative industry taught her wasn&#8217;t how to teach &#8211; it was how to understand people. That session was less a class and more an exchange.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact,&nbsp;that experience made her realize something important:&nbsp;<strong>knowing&nbsp;how to teach&nbsp;and actually&nbsp;being able to teach&nbsp;are two different things.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it. The former is theory. But the latter requires facing a real person &#8211; understanding his confusion, his needs, and why he&#8217;s sitting in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"831\" height=\"83\" src=\"https:\/\/online.mandarininn.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u7965\u4e91\u5206\u9694\u6761-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/online.mandarininn.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u7965\u4e91\u5206\u9694\u6761-4.png 831w, https:\/\/online.mandarininn.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u7965\u4e91\u5206\u9694\u6761-4-300x30.png 300w, https:\/\/online.mandarininn.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u7965\u4e91\u5206\u9694\u6761-4-768x77.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learning Chinese Effectively<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask her about the secret to learning Chinese, and her answer is unexpectedly off-script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, &#8216;understanding&#8217; is key &#8211; understanding why students learn, how they&#8217;ll use it, and also understanding the language itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example,&nbsp;She meets many students who are too worried about being &#8220;correct&#8221; to speak at all. And to them, she always says the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>It&#8217;s okay &#8211; Chinese, a lot of the time, depends on the situation. Just say it first. That&#8217;s where mutual understanding begins.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her view, difficulty isn&#8217;t a barrier. Growing up in Yunnan&#8217;s diverse ethnic minority environment kept that passion alive.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here&#8217;s the connection.&nbsp;These interests aren&#8217;t irrelevant to her teaching. If you can solve one small real-life problem in Chinese today, that&#8217;s success.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says this with a calm voice, but with the conviction that comes from lived experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Words for Future Teachers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those preparing for the international Chinese teacher certification, her advice is simple and direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Theory and knowledge matter, but experience matters too. Knowing &#8216;how to teach&#8217; and actually &#8216;getting students to learn&#8217; are not the same.
