Mid-Autumn Festival \uff08\u4e2d\u79cb\u8282 zh\u014dng qi\u016b ji\u00e9\uff09<\/strong>, commonly referred to as the  Moon Festival, is observed every year on the fifteenth day<\/strong> of the eighth month<\/strong> of the Chinese calendar. This year, that day falls on September 29<\/strong>. Families and friends gather to celebrate this holiday with fun activities like moon gazing<\/strong>, moon cake eating<\/strong>, and bunny lantern making<\/strong>. We’re not unfamiliar with this yearly event, but only a few people know what Mid-Autumn actually is. Are you curious about how did it all start? Why is it still celebrated up to this day? The Backstory of Mid-Autumn Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival started with a legend about\u00a0Hou Yi(\u540e\u88d4\u00a0h\u00f2u y\u00ec)\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Chang E\uff08\u5ae6\u5a25\u00a0ch\u00e1ng \u00e9\uff09<\/strong>. Long time ago, when there were ten suns in the sky, the world was full of chaos. A lot of people were killed, crops were destroyed. Hou Yi was called by the Emperor of Heaven to eliminate nine suns. Hou Yi succeeded, the weather instantly improved, and lives were saved. The elixir of immortality was given as a reward to Hou Yi. Hou Yi met Chang E while he was on Earth, and the two fell in love and got married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hou Yi went to the Queen Mother to request the elixir <\/strong>of life because he desired to live his entire life with Chang E. The Queen Mother decided to give Hou Yi the elixir, enough for two individuals to share half of it, in  exchange for the good actions he had done for the Earth. When Hou Yi got home, he told his wife that on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon was full and brilliant, they will consume it together. However, a cunning guy named Feng Meng \uff08\u9022\u8499 <\/strong>f\u00e9ng m\u00e9ng<\/strong>\uff09<\/strong>heard the news and desired to steal the elixir for himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Hou Yi got home from his hunting trip on the fifteenth day, Feng Meng went to Hou Yi’s house and coerced Chang E into giving him the elixir. She had no other option but to swallow the elixir, because she was aware that she could not defeat Feng Meng. Hou Yi discovered that his wife had been taken to Heaven when he returned. Because the Moon is closest to the Earth, Chang E chose to dwell there. Hou Yi offered the meals Chang E used to enjoy in the garden as a sacrifice while gazing up at the moon. Thus, on this day, people began to adore the moon. Later, Chang E and Hou Yi correspondingly became known as the yin and yang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spirit Animal of Mid-Autumn Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jade Rabbit\uff08\u7389\u5154\u00a0y\u00f9 t\u00f9\uff09\u00a0<\/strong>has also become the symbol of Mid-Autumn. The markings of the moon are said to look like a rabbit holding a mortar and pestle, who accompanies Chang E on the moon.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Tradition <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This festival only became an official celebration in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) when ancient emperors of China would host a feast to make offerings to deities and the moon in celebration of the year\u2019s harvest.  Mid-autumn festival then evolved into a festival of many traditions: to give thanks to the moon<\/strong>, pray for better luck<\/strong>, fortune and fertility<\/strong>, and reunite with the family to celebrate and admire the moon in its full glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When gathering with friends and family, there is one special food in particular that has to be eaten each year. Do you know what it is? Yes, you guessed it right! The M<\/strong>ooncake \uff08\u6708\u997c <\/strong>yu\u00e8 b\u01d0ng<\/strong>\uff09<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mooncakes symbolise togetherness\uff08\u4eb2\u5bc6\u65e0\u95f4 <\/strong>q\u012bn m\u00ec w\u00fa ji\u00e0n<\/strong>\uff09<\/strong> and harmony\uff08\u548c\u8c10 <\/strong>h\u00e9 xi\u00e9<\/strong>\uff09<\/strong>. Mooncakes are usually eaten in small wedges with families or friends during the night of Mid-Autumn, often served with tea or wine. How to make Mooncake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you want to make your own mooncake? Try it out by following these 4 simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To start off, prepare these ingredients<\/strong>\uff08\u6750\u6599 c\u00e1i li\u00e0o\uff09<\/strong>\uff1a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–       200g Medium-grained flour\uff08\u4e2d\u7b4b\u9762\u7c89 zh\u014dng j\u012bn mi\u00e0n f\u011bn\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–       4g Baking soda water\uff08\u67a7\u6c34 ji\u01cen shu\u01d0\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–       140g Sugar syrup\uff08\u8f6c\u5316\u7cd6\u6d46 zhu\u01cen hu\u00e0 t\u00e1ng ji\u0101ng\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–       50g Peanut oil\uff08\u82b1\u751f\u6cb9 hu\u0101 sh\u0113ng y\u00f3u\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–       Salted egg\uff08\u54b8\u9e21\u86cb xi\u00e1n j\u012b d\u00e0n\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making process (\u5236\u4f5c\u8fc7\u7a0b zh\u00ec zu\u00f2 gu\u00f2 ch\u00e9ng\uff09\uff1a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. Fillings \uff08<\/strong>\u9985\u6599 xi\u00e0n li\u00e0o\uff09<\/strong>\uff08about 15 mooncakes can be made with 75g of this ingredient\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flavor\uff08\u5473\u9053 w\u00e8i d\u00e0o\uff09: Egg yolk and white lotus seed paste \uff08\u86cb\u9ec4\u767d\u83b2\u84c9 d\u00e0n hu\u00e1ng b\u00e1i li\u00e1n r\u00f3ng\uff09 \uff1bIt is one of the most popular mooncake flavors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–      Duck egg yolk \uff08\u9e2d\u86cb\u9ec4 y\u0101 d\u00e0n hu\u00e1ng\uff0915g<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–      Lotus paste filling \uff08\u83b2\u84c9\u9985 li\u00e1n r\u00f3ng xi\u00e0n\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spray a layer of white wine\uff08\u767d\u9152 b\u00e1i ji\u01d4\uff09on the surface of duck egg yolk and bake it in the oven at 180 degree celcius <\/strong>for 8 minutes<\/strong>. Take it out until it is cool, then wrap it with lotus paste to form a ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B. Dough \uff08\u9762\u56e2 <\/strong>mi\u00e0n tu\u00e1n\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Add sugar syrup<\/strong>, baking soda water<\/strong>, and peanut oil<\/strong> into the flour, stir evenly with a scraper, knead into a dough, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 2 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. After taking out the dough, knead it and divide it into small balls weighing 25g each<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Gently press the small dough ball, wrap the filling and knead it into a round ball, with the closing point serving as the bottom part of the mooncake. Cover the wrapped mooncake balls with a thin layer of corn starch to prevent adhesion and place them in mooncake mold to shape the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. After every ball is pressed, sprinkle some water on the surface to keep it moist. Place it in a\u00a0200 degrees Celsius<\/strong>\u00a0preheated oven\u00a0and bake for\u00a05 minutes<\/strong>. After it has come to its shape, take it out. Brush a layer of egg yolk solution on each mooncake, and continue to bake it at\u00a0180 degrees Celsius<\/strong>\u00a0for about\u00a015 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
